A Postponed Sacrifice

A Postponed Sacrifice

The Akedah (“Binding of Isaac,” cf. Gen 22) is read here not as an isolated episode but as a sacrifice postponed. Isaac descends from the mountain because the Lamb (Jesus) has not yet arrived; Abraham’s terrible Friday awaits another Friday and another Son. The poem moves typologically from Abraham and Isaac toward Mary and Christ, from Isaac’s wood toward the wood carried by Jesus, and finally to the opened side of the Crucified from which life flows. The spiritual question then becomes personal: Christ’s death occurred once in history (on Good Friday), but how does the believer enter that death so that resurrection becomes more than a past event observed from afar?
